For those of you who are getting a puppy and enjoy pondering what you will name your puppy well in advance, the "Deadliest Catch" is the theme for this litter's registered names. The Deadliest Catch is Discovery Channel's Emmy-nominated series which follows crab-fishing vessels on the Bering Sea as they struggle against the treacherous weather conditions doing one of the deadliest — and most lucrative — jobs in the world. Jan and I enjoy watching the show sometimes and feel like using this theme ties in with the nautical heritage of the PWD, as well as reminding us of our days in Alaska and Kilo's birth and puppyhood there.
Dogs that are registered (we will pay for all pups in this litter to be American Kennel Club registered) go through life with two names; their registered name and their "call" name. The registered name is a fancy high-falutin' moniker that is official in the eyes of the AKC and the "call" name is what Rover will answer to on a daily basis.
In Stoker's case, "Lookout's Stokin' the Fire" is her registered name, while her "call" name is "Stoker". Registered names and call names do not need to have anything in common.
For this litter, the pups will need to have the kennel name "Lookout" and the designation F/V (for fishing vessel) followed by the name of one of the fishing vessels pre-registered for the 2007 Bristol Bay King Crab season. You can find a list of names here.
A sample registered name for a puppy from this litter might be: Lookout's F/V Bering Star
If you wanted the call name to reflect the registered name you could call your pup "Star" or "Stella" (star in Italian), "Vega" or "Castor" (names of stars).....
